Latino Health Project

The DUH Latino Health Project is responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, and evaluating cost effective and culturally sensitive programs and processes to serve the Latino/Hispanic patient population at Duke University Hospital. To accomplish the goals of this project, the Program Coordinator must work with multiple individuals, offices, clinical services and departments at Duke and agencies in the community.

History

Between 1990 and 2000, the US census recorded a 730% increase in the Latino population of Durham County. As a result, the Latino Health Project was implemented at DUH to meet the needs of this new patient population and has become the central clearing house for all issues involving Latino patients and staff. In the ensuing three years, the following outcomes have been achieved with only one full-time coordinator: the establishment of close and positive relationships with the Mexican consulate and Latino leaders and agencies in the community; a survey of all the units and clinics at DUH and DUMC to address compliance with Title VI legislation; multiple consultations on complex patient situations; the provision of cultural competence classes to various departments; the management of crises that involve the Latino community, e.g., the 2002 ice storm; and work with multiple units/clinics and systems at DUH as well as DUHS to improve overall systems of care for Latino patients and staff.
